Mission to the Moon: Move More, Feel Better

Are you ready for lift-off?

The new “Mission to the Moon” Movement Challenge is all about getting moving, staying active, and preventing ‘deconditioning.’

Deconditioning refers to the physical decline due to inactivity or prolonged bed rest, often seen during and after illness or injury. It’s characterised by a decrease in muscle strength, endurance, and coordination, and can also impact mental wellbeing and ability to perform daily tasks. The extent of deconditioning depends on the duration and severity of inactivity, with longer periods of inactivity leading to more severe and longer-lasting effects.  Deconditioning can happen quickly which is one of the key risks when in hospital and is the reason why the teams at the hospital are keen to spread this message.

Deconditioning can happen faster than you think. But with small, daily movements, we can stay strong, mobile and healthy.

To help get more people to be more active, and to raise awareness of deconditioning, together, we’ll be walking, running, cycling, swimming, and wheeling our way to the Moon – that’s 238,855 miles!

Why?

Because inactivity and deconditioning can sneak up on all of us, but especially people with long term conditions, limited mobility, and disabilities. Whether you’re sitting at a desk or working from home, or in a chair or bed, small changes like regular movement can make a huge difference to your health.

Let’s raise awareness, get active, and inspire others. Log your miles, track progress, and contribute to our giant leap for wellness!
