Meet Michelle - one of our most recent recruits!

We are continuing to grow our Community Health Champions and want to say a warm welcome to Michelle from SAGE.

SAGE is a Staffordshire charity that supports LGBT+ people, their families and friends as well as people who are questioning their gender or sexuality.
We were joined at our festive Champions catch up by SAGE coordinator James and trustee Michelle, who supports with IT and looks after some of the charity’s peer support groups and volunteers.
Michelle recently graduated from University of Staffordshire as a mental health nurse where she also worked in student recruitment support, helping to interview and assess the suitability of applicants to her course.
Until recently Michelle worked as a carer and has been passionate about healthcare after her mum died suddenly from cervical cancer.

She said: “She had vascular dementia and was in a care home and they didn’t take her for her smear test. My focus as a carer has been to keep as many people safe at home so they didn’t have to go through with what I went through with mum.”

Michelle also advocates strongly for trans healthcare and makes the point that trans females will still need prostate checks and trans males will need to be checked for cervical cancer.

She said: “I’d like more awareness of trans issues and how this affects us physically as well as mentally.”
