Draft All Age Carers Strategy Consultation

Have your say on supporting carers in Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent City Council, along with their partners, are developing a Joint All Age Carers Strategy for 2025-2029. This strategy will outline how they’ll work together to support unpaid carers of all ages in our city.

Why your feedback matters

They want to hear from carers and those who support them. Your feedback on the draft strategy will help them finalise it and develop an effective implementation plan to deliver on its priorities and outcomes.

Developing the strategy

They have been working closely with carers and professionals to understand carers’ experiences and what’s most important to them. They’ve heard that many people who provide care don’t necessarily identify as “carers” – they see themselves as helping a neighbour, friend, or loved one.

Who is a carer?

The Care Act 2014 defines a carer as:

  • An adult who provides or intends to provide care for another adult.

NHS England defines a carer as:

  • Anyone who looks after a family member, partner, or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem, or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.

What the strategy will do

The strategy will set out the City Council we intend to:

  • Better identify carers
  • Listen to and value what they say
  • Provide support to help them maintain their caring role

Priorities for carers

They’ve identified eleven priorities to support carers. The strategy outlines their intentions for each priority, and would like your feedback. This feedback will shape the implementation plan, ensuring they take the right actions to support carers.
