Harnessing the power of song

How do we make complex health information stick? Stoke Your Gratitude CIC is using the power of song to find out.

Funded through the VAST Tackling Health Inequalities Grants Programme, the “Hide the Vegetables in the Cake: Songs for Health Equality” project aims to create a digital songbook for use across the city.

Director Bharat Shah explained: “Sometimes, public health reports can feel a bit heavy. This project aims to hide the vegetables – evidence and data – inside the cake which are catchy, memorable songs.

“By turning lived experiences into “audio fables,” the project helps us understand the causes of health inequality, like housing, transport, and stigma, without the jargon.”

Stoke Your Gratitude are now inviting fellow Community Health Champions to get involved in making sure the digital songbook is as good and as useful as it can be.

The project is currently looking for Champions to take part in short listening sessions to help shape how we communicate health issues
in the future. This will invite feedback and a chat about the themes.

Bharat added: “Community Health Champions are often the bridge between information and the community and we want them to use these songs in their own groups or workshops to get people talking. Longer term we also want help to evaluate if they make health topics easier to discuss than traditional leaflets.”
