The summer holidays should be a happy, healthy time for children across the city.

That’s why the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, funded by the Department for Education (DfE) is so important. It’s run thanks to a unique partnership with the Hubb Foundation – a charity dedicated to supporting families and communities in creating happy, healthy school holidays.

HAF recognises that school holidays can be pressure points for some families, seeing a combination of increased costs and reduced incomes. Some children are more likely to experience ‘unhealthy holidays’ in terms of nutrition and physical health and some children from lower-income families are less likely to access fun activities. In short, HAF ensures that children in low-income households have access to food and inclusive activities when they aren’t in school.

HAF is primarily aimed at school-aged children from reception to year 11 who receive benefits-related free school meals. But, as a city council, we have the flexibility to use some of the HAF funding to provide holiday club places for children who are not in receipt of free school meals but who we believe could benefit from HAF provision.

Activities available to book include arts and crafts, sports and family fun days! Availability is limited for some – so get booked on soon.
