The ICS is hosting a webinar to provide overview and details about the new virtual ward programme that is being implemented across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Virtual wards are a way of allowing patients to receive treatment at home rather than in hospital. In its early phase of development, anyone who is interested in remote and digital care is invited.
A virtual ward programme is being developed and implemented across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and support early discharge out of hospital, so patients are treated in the comfort of their own home. Using a mixture of technology and face-to-face interventions, virtual wards will allow patients to get the care they need at home safely and conveniently, rather than being in hospital. Virtual wards enable patients to complete treatment or be monitored prior to surgery at home, which has a positive effect on patients’ mental health and wellbeing and can help speed up recovery.
Virtual wards are already in place across many parts of the country and provide safe care for appropriate patients who would otherwise be in hospital. Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, the virtual ward programme aims to provide an additional 470 ‘virtual beds’ by December 2023 initially for the following areas:
· General Acute Medicine and Frailty
· Acute Respiratory – COPD
· Heart Failure.
