Could You Give Blood? Donors Needed Urgently

An urgent plea for blood donors to come forward was recently issued by the health secretary as stocks run low.

At the moment there is particular demand for:

  • Male donors – men can donate more often than women
  • Black donors – Ro blood is needed and a common type for black donors
  • O negative donors – hospitals need this blood type most regularly, as it can be given to all patients

Summer is a time when donations are usually lower and so, the health secretary has stressed the importance of being proactive in calling for donations – so, could you give blood? Giving blood saves lives – blood or the components of blood are used to treat patients with medical conditions such as anaemia, cancer blood disorders, and those having surgery.

Read more about how blood is used, and find out more about the different blood types here.

Check if you’re eligible, and if you have never given blood before, register to become a donor here.

If you don’t get an appointment straight away, this could be for a number of reasons:

  • only the amount of blood needed is collected so that donations are not wasted.
  • those with known blood types may be prioritised.
  • as a safety precaution, the number of donation chairs per session has been reduced to give more space between donors.

Please consider booking several months ahead, blood has a limited shelf life so only the necessary amount is collected to avoid wasting any life-saving donations. However, new people will be needed later in the year to keep a steady supply.
