The ‘Better Health Food Scanner App’ campaign aims to influence parents’ purchasing behaviour through the use of the Food Scanner App to reduce the consumption of foods that are high in sugar, saturated fat and salt and help reduce levels of childhood obesity.
The latest National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP) found obesity levels have increased in both reception class and year 6 by more than 4 percentage points between 2019-20 and 2020-211.
More than 1 in 4 children aged four to five years and 4 in 10 aged 10 – 11 are now overweight or obese.
There is an urgent need to improve children’s health as families are up against a flood of unhealthy food and drink options. As part of the campaign, Better Health has updated the NHS Food Scanner App to make it easier for parents to find healthier food and drinks for their children.
The App is being positioned as a handy health “hack” that helps parents swap foods that are higher in sugar, saturated fat, and salt, for healthier choices.
